1992-1996 F150, F250 Ford Bronco PSOM

A common failure is a bobbing speedometer needle and possible transmission shifting faults caused by the PSOM (Programming Speed Output Module) which is part of the speedometer head.

Also, on occasion the display may be inoperative making it impossible to read mileage.

Tech Notes

Things that can cause the needle pointer to jump while driving and hard shifts.

1. Defective PSOM
2. Failed speed sensor with low-quality replacements.
3. Tone ring warped or missing tooth.
4. Bad wiring, connectors, bad ground strap.
5. Neutral safety switch dirty or failing.
6. Not uncommon to have several of these issues at the same time.
7. Footnote, with a bad PSOM you may not be able to read fault codes in your transmission.

2004-2008 Ford F150 XLT Lariat King Ranch FX2 FX4

The F150 speedometer gauge cluster is known for several issues.

Here are a few listed below:

1. The mileage display goes out or dim.
2. A circuit fault causing the F150 brake light indicator in cluster to indicate on or stays lit.
3. Air bag or seat belt indicator stays on.
4. Fuel gauge and other individual gauges fail.
5. Entire F150 speedometer gauge cluster is intermittent or fails to off.

2009 - 2014 F150 Speedometer Gauge Cluster

Several problems thus far with later model F150 gauge clusters which may fail are speedometer and tach sometimes caused by failed needle indicators and  possible faulty stepper motor.

Also, some LED back light issues are common for 09-13 F150 gauge clusters.

1999 -2001 Ford F250, F350, F450 Speedometer Gauge Cluster

There is a high failure rate for speedometer needles that indicate incorrect speed and in some cases the odometer may also fail on the F250 & F350.

2002-2004 Ford F250, F350 Speedometer Gauge Cluster

Common failures include:

1.Windows will not roll up.

2. Radio inoperative.

3. Dome light will not go off.

4. Battery drain.

5. Fuel gauge and other individual gauges fail.

As always there are other things beside the cluster that can cause problems listed above but these are common issues associated with a F250, F350 faulty cluster.

2005, 2006, 2007, Ford F250, F350 Speedometer Gauge Clusters

Common failures are:

1. Instrument cluster fails or powers up intermittently and may even cause window or radio failure.
2. Mileage display goes dim or blank.
3. Stuck or failed fuel gauge or other fail individual gauge/ stepper motors.
4. Backlight failed or dim.

2005-2007 Ford F250, F350 F450 Trailer Brake Controller

Typical problems for Ford brake controller are TBC fault & trailer disconnected messages.

2002-2007 Ford F250 Fuse Box, 2004-2008 Ford F150 Fuse Box

A common failure for Ford F150, F250 Smart Junction Fuse Box for model years 2002, 2005, 2006, 2007, and 2008. A Smart Junction Box (Central Junction Box) failure commonly appears as a fuel or battery related issue.

Common symptoms may include:

• Intermittent, erratic, or complete failure of the fuel pump (very common).
• Horn staying on or working intermittently.
• Battery Saver staying on, not working, or working intermittently.
• Trailer lights staying on, not working, or working intermittently.

2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012 Ford F250, F350 Speedometer Gauge Cluster

We are starting to see the 2008-2012 F250 clusters that are intermittent or just in a failed state. In some instances, the center display is out.

Common issues with the Ford F250, F350 speedometer cluster is the center display goes dim or in most cases completely out.

2004-2005 Ford Explorer Sport Trac Speedometer Gauge Cluster

The sport trac cluster has display issues, making it impossible to read the mileage.

Other issues common with the Sport Trac speedometer cluster are intermittent power on/off for the entire gauge cluster.

1996-2003 Ford Ranger Speedometer Gauge Cluster

Analog odometer and tripmeter become inoperative, but speedometer continues to work normally. Individual gauge issues are rare. This is also the same cluster that is installed in small Mazda pickups.
